How to Dress (and Feel Beautiful) While Pregnant — the French Way ♡ (part 1)

Bonjour, mamans!

Let's clear something up right away: being pregnant does not mean disappearing into a sea of shapeless "maternity" clothes. In France, we don't really do maternity clothes the way they're imagined elsewhere. A French woman expecting a baby dresses like… a French woman. She simply chooses pieces that move with her new shape, and she carries herself with the same ease she always has. Of course, you need to adapt to your seasons, job and comfort.

That's the whole secret, really. Elegance isn't about hiding the bump  it's about dressing the woman.

❤️Here's how we like to think about it at Roses and Dreams.

Invest in pieces, not in "maternity."
The most chic move you can make is to buy beautiful things you'll actually keep wearing afterward. A flowy linen dress, a soft knit, a wrap top, a slip skirt that sits under the belly these grow with you and stay in your closet long after baby arrives. That's exactly the idea behind our Mama Friendly edit: pieces worth investing in that just happen to be wonderful before, during and after pregnancy. Spending just to spend is not recommended, unless its an expansive piece that makes you happy!

Let the fabric do the work.
Forget anything stiff, too tight or clingy. Think linen, soft cotton, silky drapes natural fabrics that breathe in the Miami heat and skim the body instead of squeezing it. A loose silhouette in a gorgeous fabric always reads as intentional, never as "I gave up." A French woman would rather be a little undone than uncomfortable.

Build around the dress.
The dress is your best friend right now. A bias-cut or empire-waist style needs almost no effort and looks polished from the very first trimester to the very last. Add a hat, a pair of sandals, a little gold jewelry et voilà, you're dressed.

Keep your accessories — they still fit.
When clothes feel limiting, this is where you play. A great straw bag, oversized sunglasses, delicate layered necklaces, a swipe of red lip. Accessories carry the whole look and remind you that you are still in there stylish as ever.

Borrow the French uniform: one signature, kept simple.
A breton stripe and white jeans or Bermuda linen shorts. A linen jumpsuit, button down and espadrilles. A long floral dress with flat sandals. The French way is to find a handful of easy combinations that always work, so getting dressed never becomes one more thing to worry about.

Dress for the woman you are today.
Not the body you had, not the body you'll have after. Your shape is changing every few weeks, (or overnight...!) and chasing your "old" closet only leads to frustration. Choose a few things that fit beautifully right now, and wear them with confidence. Confidence is, and always has been, the most French accessory of all. Set these pieces aside and create your ''maternity closet'', forget about trying on your pre-pregrenancy clothes.

You are creating a whole little person that is the most glamorous thing in the world. Let your wardrobe make you feel it, treat yourself to some new pieces and enjoy this very special moment of your life.
